                With reference to your above cited letter under reference regarding acceptance of English at ‘AS’ level qualification for admission to medical degree programme.  I am directed to state that the matter was considered by the Executive Committee of the Council in its meeting held on 2nd Feb, 2008 wherein the members of the Adhoc Committee appointed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court were also present.  The decision of the Adhoc Committee and the Executive Committee is as under:-

                “The members of the Adhoc Committee appointed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court and the Executive Committee of the Council after due deliberations decided that the determination of the syllabus in the paper of English at any examination would be best decided by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)............ and further decided to advise the University of Cambridge to approach the CBSE in the matter.”

                Your attention is also invited to the letter dated 2nd January 2008 of the Director (Academic), CBSE, wherein it has been clarified that “the equivalence regarding language proficiency between CBSE and the AS level English Language course 8693 level should be extended to second year (standard 12) also instead of standard 11 alone and should form a part of the external examination at class 12”.

                It may also please be noted that the Regional Manager, South Asia, University of Cambridge International Examinations, New Delhi, vide his letter dated 22nd April, 2008 has confirmed that CIE will ensure that students are instructed to follow all of the recommendations and complete the AS level English course 8693 examination in Class 12.

                In view of above, the AS level English course 8693 forming a part of the external examination at Class 12 of Cambridge University examination may be considered as equivalent to CBSE English level course as stipulated by the Director, CBSE in the letter dated 02-01-2008 and, as such AS level English course 8693 at Class 12 of Cambridge University examination would be acceptable as equivalent English language qualification for admission to undergraduate medical course.
